Hosting Control Panels Revisited

A while back we discussed hosting control panels, and the many options available to us after Sun’s decommissioning of the Cobalt line.

You’ll be pleased to know that some kind folks at Sun made the wise decision to release the Cobalt RaQ550 OS as open-source. Some kind folks in Japan have taken it upon themselves to port it to common open-source operating systems.

The result is BlueQuartz, and here’s what we can tell you about it so far.

  • It’s been ported to RedHat 9 and Fedora Core 1. The Fedora Core 1 port is still in beta phase.
  • It does not support Active Server Pages (ASP) or FrontPage Extensions. We do not consider this a liability. ;-)
  • Minor hacks are required to make the Cobalt Migration Utility (cmuTools) work, because the build number is not what is expected by cmu.
  • Minor hacks will likely be required to make packages from pkgmaster, edison, etc. install on this unit.
  • Other than that, it seems that most of the functionality of the RaQ550 has been included, even a newer, beefier build of PHP (PHP 4.3.8).
