I should be more grateful for this IT career of mine. It has fed my family and my appetites. It’s frustrating to hit a ceiling, and to know that you should be out on your own, carving out your own path, but lack the resources or knowhow to get it started.
I’m also a generalist, and while being a generalist can be intensely rewarding in terms of sheer breadth of experience, it can be limiting in the career front. Everyone’s looking for a perfect specialist, a lot of recriters and hiring people don’t have the foresight to see that hiring a generalist can be more rewarding in the long term.
Or maybe they’re all right. Maybe I’m a jack of all trades and master of none. I’m certainly no musician. I’m a decent writer who seldom feels inspired enough to write. I play mediocre pool. I’m an average woodworker. I’m a decent photographer. I’m great at solving IT problems, but at the end of the day this doesn’t make me feel complete.
There is news that I can talk about, and that’s things like:
* I got another photography gig. This time I’ll be shooting boats in Annapolis over the weekend. Yes, it’s a paid gig. A resume notch. Another nail in the coffin of my overachieving IT career. Fuck IT. It’s a great start, but let me tell you young folks the dirty truth about IT. If you’re getting paid at all, you’re working for the MAN, and it will kill your fucking soul sooner or later.
* Appointment with my all-time favorite masseuse this weekend as well. WOOHOO. Been a while.
* Ordered a new keyboard. Maybe that’ll be another nail in the coffin. Alesis Fusion 8HD. Google it.
* Progress on the boat. Just about ready to glue the seams. There are current photos on http://www.snapnaked.com because it’s easier to post them there than here. Ninnies.
* I’ve been listening to too much Postal Service and Rilo Kiley lately. Wilco too. I also listened to all four of the KISS solo albums this past week. I don’t recommend that, in case you’re wondering. Especially Peter’s. Blech.
The other kind of news is the news I don’t want to share. That’s not news. That’s my private shit. Public vs private. Get it?
Advice to readers: Hold on to what you’ve got, and don’t do stupid things. That is all.
