In conjunction with my recent fishing trip, I discovered a website, FishingHurts.com, a PETA-sponsored website pushing vegetarian by guilting people regarding the intelligence and personalities of fish. Don’t get me wrong, I have no grudge against vegetarians. I would probably be healthier and happier as a vegetarian. I just can’t do it. Even the Buddhist ethos of not taking lives won’t sway me. Does the food chain have Buddha-nature? I think it does. I can’t speak for cattle and chickens, but I do believe that if we were designed, we were designed to eat fish, and fish were designed to be eaten by us. I would be pretty unsure about pigs as well, but bacon and sausage just seem to perfect to be a coincidence.
So go ahead. Post your billboards of dogs with fishing hooks in their mouths. I will not be swayed. As long as there are tuna, and salmon, and crabs, shrimp, oysters, clams, mussels, lobster and other delicacies to be pulled from the seas, seasoned and eaten, I will be there as a willing participant.
Some have credited diet of animals with the evolution of the human brain. While there may be reasons to reconsider the benefits of human evolution, I believe in it overall. I’m happy with my brain, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to think, feel, enjoy, ruminate and philosophize. If that’s the result of eating cows, that’s fine with me. I like a good steak.
