Resolutions Redux

It’s the sixth of January, and the first time I’ve been able to attack one of my important resolutions — the resolution regarding working out. I had a nasty cold kick in starting on New Year’s Day, and today was the first day it subsided enough for me to do much more than lounge. Actually, yesterday I dismantled and removed the Solstice Tree. Today I managed to disconnect and box up all of the Solstice Lights which adorned the house and doorway area.

Around 8:30, I got a wild hair, and decided, WTF, I’m going to work out. So I put my workout clothes and cross trainers on, and marched my fat ass down to the basement where we keep the “Exercise Equipment Storage Room.” I took the Ipod, connected it to a set of computer speakers with a subwoofer, and scrolled down the album list until I found something unfamiliar enough yet likely to be energetic enough for this purpose. I settled for Bloc Party’s “Silent Alarm” from what, 2005 or so. It was exactly what I needed. My ridiculous goal was to work through the entire album, as my first workout in months. I managed to hang through ten songs, alternating between the stair machine and the airbike at each song interval.

Who know if I’ll be able to keep this up all year — if I can do it twice a week, chances are I’ll be posting body photos here later in the year. I’m just happy I didn’t keel over. Honestly, if I had heart problems they should have kicked in during this workout.

I thought of more Resolutions. Who’s to say it’s too late if it’s after the first of the year?

* Collect bottles of Islay scotch — one bottle representing each distillery on the Island. So far I’ve tasted Laphroaig and Lagavulin, Ardbeg is next. But I currently don’t have any bottles going.

* Collect bourbon — just enough to fill up my Knob Creek family display case. One bottle each of Booker’s, Baker’s, Basil Hayden’s and Knob Creek.

* Solve Rubik’s Cube in under one minute. My current speed, as verified over the holiday weekend, is 1:43. That’s one minute forty-three seconds. The world record is nine seconds.

New Year’s Resolutions

In the past I’ve been back and forth on the validity of New Year’s Resolutions.  Time, and our historical division of it into the seemingly random 365 days, 52 weeks, 12 months, is just so arbitrary, and we should be constantly renewing ourselves and examining our goals rather than just once a year.

That said, I’ve got some hard and soft goals this year.

I want to jumpstart my career path.  It’s been a few years since I’ve obtained any certifications that prove to potential employers that I’m worth my salt.  I’d like to complete the RHCE exam in the spring, and the CCIE exam in the fall.  Ambitious for one year, but I have obtained multiple unrelated certs in a year in the past, so I’m pretty sure I can do it.

I want to jumpstart my body.  I’m tired of being soft in the middle.

I have to complete my boat in time to launch it in spring.

I would like to be published again.  And not in a technical magazine this time.  Two articles on web server security do not an author make.

I would like to open a studio.
